Thompson calls time after decade at BPBA

AFTER helping oversee a period of unprecedented growth for Bellarine basketball, outgoing Bellarine Peninsula Basketball Association (BPBA) president Gary Thompson says the time is right to step aside.

During his time on the board, the association’s domestic competition grew from about 100 teams in 2018 to more than 300 today, while membership surpassed 3,200 players.

Thompson stepped down earlier this month after more than a decade on the association’s board.

Before joining the board, he spent more than 15 years as chairman of the association’s tribunal following a career in the police force.

Reflecting on his decision, Thompson said he decided after plenty of consideration during an overseas trip.

“It just comes back down to 10 to 12 years, voluntary basis, do I still have the drive?” he said. “I think it’s probably a good time to step back.

“You see all these things coming up and you go, ‘I’ve been around long enough, I think somebody else can handle the reins.”

One of Thompson’s proudest achievements was establishing a clear pathway for young players, from domestic basketball through to representative competition.

During his tenure, the association launched its Bellarine Storm Big V program in 2019 and expanded its Victorian Junior Basketball League pathway to 22 teams.

“Hopefully that provides some sort of guidance and support for the little Johnnys and Jennys that, if they come in at under-10s, they can see maybe that there is a pathway all the way through to the Big V level,” Thompson said.

Although stepping away from official duties with the association, Thompson said he would remain available to offer an independent perspective if needed.

He also urged the Bellarine basketball community to continue backing the proposed Bellarine Sports Centre extension, which forms a key part of the association’s strategic plan. The proposal would add three courts to help meet growing demand across the region.

Association treasurer Garry Ellis will serve as president until the BPBA’s next annual general meeting, when members will elect Thompson’s successor.
