Geelong Arts Centre will host the world premiere of Mountain from June 21-25 which is the latest work created by writer/director Kit Brookman and starring Geelong performer André Jewson.

Mountain has been commissioned and co-produced by Geelong Arts Centre (GAC) through its Creative Engine grant program and is presented in association with Sweet Reason and Performing Lines.

It tells the story of a man in pieces and is described as “a hymn to the transformative power of grief, to the wonder of the unknown”.

Jewson cut his teeth on the Blakiston and Ford stages of the old ‘GPAC’ in GSODA productions, performing in countless local works, and has also taken to world stages performing the role of Zazu in the critically acclaimed Lion King The Musical.

Having recently returned from Seoul, Jewson will take on the powerful role of a man adrift in grief who he becomes fixated by the idea of hiking up a mountain.

Shifting perspectives from the deeply personal to the epic, this new solo work is a determined search for hope amidst utter devastation.

GAC CEO and creative director Joel McGuinness said the team was proud to have commissioned the work to now be performed for the first time in Jewson’s home town of Geelong, to an audience of avid local supporters and young actors and creatives aspiring to follow in his footsteps.

“Geelong Arts Centre is committed to supporting and showcasing extraordinary stories and providing professional opportunities for artists living and working in the Geelong region.

“It is vital right now to champion connections through art making and sharing of ourselves with each other and the world, and we believe that the magic where art and audience meet is precious and must be celebrated.”

Six shows will run between June 21 and 25, with the 7.30pm performance of Mountain on Friday, June 24, including a post-show Q&A with the show’s cast and creatives.
