In a bid to recognise Torquay’s hardworking volunteers, many of whom fly under the radar, RACV Torquay has partnered with Times News Group to deliver a community recognition award valued at over $2,500.

The award was launched last month following discussions between RACV Resort operations manager Bowen Kress and Times News Group advertising director Warick Brown on how best to recognise the community’s growing number of contributors in the volunteer space.

Meagan Mifsud, president of the Torquay Netball Club, received the inaugural recognition having been nominated by committee member Sharon Lanyon.

Described as a “positive and enthusiastic personality”, Meagan’s long-running involvement in the club as a player, coach, committee member and president landed her the prize.

As part of her award, Meagan enjoyed a night’s accommodation at RACV Torquay Resort before attending the Geelong v Sydney clash at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday June 1.

“We had an amazing weekend; it was very special. Initially I was a bit embarrassed because it’s not the reason why you do what you do, but it is nice to know people are grateful for your involvement in the community,” Meagan said.

“Sharon’s been on the committee for about seven or eight years out of the 12 years I’ve been around. She’s done a lot herself. As soon as I hung up from the RACV, I got on the phone to her straight away. I was very chuffed.”

The Torquay mother of two said she’s delighted the award is continuing as there are so many admirable volunteers in Torquay who go unnoticed.

This month’s award will see its recipient and their chosen guest spend a night at RACV Torquay Resort’s premium room ($528 per night) after attending the Geelong v North Melbourne game (Round 16) at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday August 10.

The winner and their guest will experience Geelong Cats’ “inner sanctum” ($995 per person), which includes a three-course meal, premium beverage package, pre-game briefing from Geelong Cats’ coaching staff, premium reserved seating and a visit to the players rooms post-match.

Guests will also get the chance to watch the team complete their warm-up before the siren for the first quarter sounds.

Know of someone worthy of the win? Nominations must – in 50 words or less – explain how the nominee engages and supports the community.

All entries must describe a philanthropic effort carried out in the last 12 months.

Images of the nominee are optional but encouraged. Entrants are asked to provide their contact details as well as the nominee’s to [email protected].

au by 5pm on Tuesday July 30. The winner will be announced on Thursday August 1.
