Torquay Library is abandoning the age-old relationship between silence and reading for one special morning this weekend.

On January 18, the library will play host to “Make Noise in the Torquay Library” which will see people socialise through learning, music and laughter.

Activities include a laughter session with Phillipa Challis OAM from Geelong group Live Life Laughing, ukulele lessons under guidance from Bellbrae Ukulele Group, an eAudio demonstration and hands-on science activities for kids (including jumping sand) as well as other sound-related experiments.

Surf Coast Shire councillor Margot Smith, deputy chair of the Broad of Geelong Regional Library Corporation, said the event served as an opportunity to embrace the evolving face of public libraries.

“The Torquay Library is such an asset to our community, and this event showcases the library as a social place – a place to connect, to learn new skills, and also to have fun,” Cr Smith said.

“People may think of public libraries as hushed spaces, but modern libraries can be full of energy and activity. I encourage residents as well as visitors to head along to this great family day out and enjoy the library’s noisier side.”

Phillipa Challis OAM said she’s excited to lead participants through a workshop celebrating the joy and health benefits of laughing.

“When you laugh you use every muscle in your body. It is an easy way for people of all abilities to have a complete work out and do so without resorting to jokes or humour, and be invigorated by all the benefits of laughter – more energy, less stress and a happier outlook on life,” she said.

“It will immediately put a smile on their face, have them sharing laughter with complete strangers, and leave them feeling energised and exhilarated,” she said.

The event – which will run from 10am-1pm – will also include a sausage sizzle and face painting. It is free to attend, and no bookings are required.

Torquay Library is located within the Surf City Plaza on Beach Road, Torquay.
