OCEAN Grove Bowling Club’s $6 million dome redevelopment has been recognised as Victoria’s best community club redevelopment less than a year after opening.

The project last week claimed the Community Clubs Victoria Award for best community club redevelopment over $1 million.

Opening in September, the project features a 16-rink international standard facility with large LED screens, livestreaming capability, tiered grandstands and advanced lighting.

The venue has already hosted state and national competitions, along with players from 33 nations during the World Bowls Indoor Championships.

“We’re seeing more people than ever choosing to spend time at the club, whether that’s enjoying a meal with family, playing barefoot bowls or pickleball, attending community group meetings, celebrating special occasions or simply catching up with friends,” Ocean Grove Bowling Club chief executive Nathan O’Neill said.

“At the same time, the redevelopment has opened the door to a much broader range of events, from state, national and international bowls competitions through to school programs, community initiatives and major entertainment events.”

The redevelopment has also attracted attention from clubs across Australia looking to replicate its success.

“Almost every week we’re welcoming visitors from across Victoria and interstate who want to tour the dome and learn more about what we’ve created,” O’Neill said.

“It’s reassuring to know we’ve delivered something that’s genuinely unique and is now being recognised as a leading bowls venue in Australia.”

The bowling club also won this year’s sport and entertainment award, which recognises clubs that deliver outstanding sporting and entertainment experiences while creating a positive impact for their community.

O’Neill said the award recognised the club’s broad community offering, from barefoot bowls and pickleball to school programs.

He said the honours reflected years of work from the club’s board, staff, volunteers and members.

“To be recognised among so many outstanding clubs across Victoria is something we’re incredibly proud of,” he said.

“It’s a fast-paced industry where you’re always focused on what’s next, so moments like these give you the opportunity to stop, reflect and appreciate just how far the team has come.”
