Cats captain Patrick Dangerfield to play on in 2027

Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield will play on in 2027 after signing a one-year contract extension on Friday.

The 36-year-old has played 374 AFL matches, including 220 in his 12 seasons with the Cats, and now looks destined to join the illustrious 400-game club next season.

Dangerfield has been one of the AFL’s most influential midfielders of the modern era and has captained Geelong since 2023, succeeding Joel Selwood after the club’s 2022 premiership victory over Sydney.

His decorated career includes a Brownlow Medal, eight All-Australian blazers and three club Carji Greeves Medals.

Dangerfield has spent more time as a forward in recent years and remains a key figure for the Cats.

He has kicked 48 goals since the start of the 2025 season and continues to use his power to influence games as the Cats look to avenge last year’s grand final defeat to Brisbane.

Club executive general manager of football Andrew Mackie said Dangerfield’s decision to extend his career highlighted his ongoing commitment to the Cats.

“It’s exciting for us all to have Pat playing for the Cats in 2027,” Mackie said. “He continues to lead from the front and remains an important player and person within our football program.

“Pat drives high standards, cares deeply about the club and has a positive influence on everyone around him, so we’re pleased to see him continue his career into 2027.”

Dangerfield will line up against Melbourne at the MCG this evening, with the clash to mark former Geelong assistant coach Steven King’s first game coaching against the Cats.

The match will begin at 7.40pm.
