THE Borough of Queenscliffe was out in force on Saturday night to officially begin the festive season, despite the disappointing weather

Residents and visitors attended Point Lonsdale Primary School to see Point Lonsdale Christmas Tree lit for the first time this summer.

Borough mayor Isabelle Tolhurst said spirits remained high throughout the evening, with proceedings moved to an alternative location inside the school’s hall due to inclement weather.

“It is a credit to the volunteer team who run the event, notably the Point Lonsdale Tree Lighting Committee that the show went on indoors despite the threat of poor weather,” Cr Tolhurst said.

Santa Claus meets with attendees as part of Saturday’s proceedings.

“Packed with community and families, and graced with some wonderful performances by local students, Council is delighted to support this event that brings the Christmas spirit to the Borough.

“Be sure to go and see the tree while it’s lit, it is truly spectacular.”

Santa Claus made a special visit to meet children and families, carols were sung, and the Queenscliff Fire Brigade kept everyone in attendance well-fed with their barbecue fundraiser.

The tree was lit at 8.30pm sharp and will continue to be lit from 8.30pm to 3.30am every day until Australia Day.

The 40-metre tall pine tree can be located at the corner of Point Lonsdale Road and Grimes Road.
