GEELONG is listed alongside the nation’s best tourist destinations in Australian Traveller’s “100 Ways to Holiday Here this Year” feature, which has just been released.
The tourism magazine partnered with Tourism Australia on a special feature edition aimed at kickstarting the Australian tourism industry.
Australian Traveller gave its editors the challenge to find the greatest “ways” Aussies could reconnect with their own country and support the domestic tourism industry at the same time.
Experiences across 10 key categories were explored – coast, cities, islands, outback, icons, indigenous, regional, food and wine, family and road trips – to ensure every type of traveller was covered.
Geelong is listed at #76 and is included in the Food and Wine category.
The feature suggests visitors take the ferry with Port Phillip Ferries from Melbourne to Geelong, discover The Beach House on Geelong’s waterfront and then venture to Little Malop Street to discover the likes of The Continental, Geelong Cellar Door and The Arborist.
Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine (TGGB) executive director Brett Ince was thrilled Geelong had made the list.
“Australia is an enormous country and we know the breadth of offer and experience across the nation is expansive, so to highlight Geelong in this list among the greatest travel experiences in the best-selling travel magazine in the country is an honour,” he said.
“Narrowing the list down to 100 around the country would not have been easy.
“It’s fair to say the tourism industry in Geelong and The Bellarine, like the rest of Australia, has been hit hard by the shutdowns and being recognised on lists like this and bringing attention to our region alongside other iconic Australian destinations is a huge boost.”
Geelong and The Bellarine recorded 6.4 million visitors last year and the tourism industry is worth $1.1 billion to the region, and TGGB believes a campaign such as this will help to encourage visitors back here.
“Our mission is to connect Australians to their next amazing Aussie trip,” Australian Traveller editor Leigh-Ann Pow said.
“To make sure they have no excuse, we have found the greatest experiences and ‘ways’ for every Australian no matter their interest or style of travel.”
