NOT-for-profit organisations, sporting clubs and community groups that promote and create a more inclusive and thriving community are being encouraged to apply for a grant.

Last week, the WDEA Works Foundation announced it had opened this year’s Community Grants, which are aimed at promoting inclusiveness and providing access and opportunities for people living with disabilities in regional communities.

The foundation, which has distributed more than $1.5 million to various businesses and community organisations around Victoria since its inception in 2004, is committed to reducing barriers for people living with disabilities to participate in community life through targeted group activities.

“We believe that everyone deserves the chance to thrive and contribute to their community, and our 2023 Community Grants through the WDEA Works foundation is one way we can support those who face barriers,” WDEA Works chief executive officer Tom Scarborough said.

“We are excited to see the positive impact these grants will have, and we look forward to working alongside our community partners to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.”

To be eligible for a community grant, applicants must be located within a WDEA Works Geographical area, and the activity or project must benefit people within the community experiencing disability or disadvantage.

The foundation provides up to $100,000 worth of community grants each year, and applicants can apply for a grant of up to $5,000.

“We encourage all eligible organisations to apply for a WDEA Works Foundation Community Grant,” Mr Scarborough said.

“Together, we can help reduce barriers and promote inclusiveness in regional communities.”

Geelong organisations Rosewall Community Centre and Miss Story Dogs were among the successful applicants last year.

Eligibility criteria for applicants include that they must be a small to medium not-for-profit organisation (under $1,000,000 annual turnover), grant projects must be located within a WDEA Works geographical area, and projects must support or benefit people within the community experiencing disability or disadvantage.

The 2023 WDEA Works Foundation Community Grants opened for applications from Thursday last week and will close on April 15 at 5pm.

Successful grant recipients will be announced on May 15.
