MORE than 400 people welcomed the day on Wadawurrung Sea Country on Monday, gathering before sunrise to celebrate NAIDOC Week at Barwon Coast’s annual Sunrise Celebration.

Held in partnership with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, the event brought together Wadawurrung Elders, Traditional Owners, First Nations Peoples, local residents and visitors to mark this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, 50 Years of Deadly.

The morning began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Corrina

Eccles, before didgeridoo player Michael Cussens performed for the crowd.

Families and children also took part in cultural activities, learning through dance and ochre painting while strengthening their connection to Country.

Barwon Coast deputy chair Gabrielle Nagle said the strong attendance reflected the community’s growing desire to celebrate and learn about Wadawurrung culture during NAIDOC Week.

“It was a privilege to stand together with Wadawurrung People, locals and visitors to celebrate NAIDOC Week on Wadawurrung Sea Country,” Nagle said.

“We thank Wadawurrung Traditional Owners for sharing their story, Country and Culture with us all.

“Seeing so many people gather before sunrise to celebrate NAIDOC Week demonstrates the deep respect our community has for Wadawurrung Culture and the importance of continuing to walk together.”
