THE Barwon River in Geelong has been declared safe again for recreational activities, after tests found a reduction in blue-green algae in water samples.

According to test results received by the Corangamite CMA last week, the existing levels of blue-green algae no longer pose a risk to recreational users, in accordance with Victorian government guidance,

The Corangamite CMA stated there was no longer a warning for users of the river to not come into physical contact with the water in the Barwon River through Geelong from below Baum’s Weir to the Lower Breakwater.

Monitoring will continue, with weekly tests conducted and the public kept informed of any changes.

A combination of hot weather, low water flows and high nutrient levels in the Barwon River contributed to the blue-green algae outbreak.
