OCEAN Grove photographer Josh Lange has captured world champion surfer Mick Fanning being chaired up the beach after his loss at the Rip Curl Pro last week.

The event at Bells Beach was Fanning’s last event as a full-time competitor in the top flight of the World Surf League (WSL) – he finished in second place.

The 16-year-old said his photo highlighted that winning wasn’t everything and how much joy surfing brought to people.

Josh got into photography about four years ago after growing up around the coast and surfing from the age of about 10.

“I started to appreciate the significance and beauty of the waves I was surfing and wanted to freeze the moments when all elements of nature came together,” he said.

“I think my passion for surfing has really driven and influenced the way I take photos.”

Josh said he loved capturing all aspects of surfing from the waves, people, environments and the joy it brought to everyone.

“I love photography because savouring a moment in time can mean people that weren’t there, can feel like they were.”
