Midweek tennis grand finals

TUESDAY June 5, midweek grand final day – and what a perfect autumn day it turned out to be for the ladies’ big matches, played on courts right across the Greater Geelong region.

Most intriguing match of all was grade 1, where at three sets all, it was down to games and in fact just one game saw Grovedale as premiers over a gallant Geelong Lawn Pink.

The ’Lawn got one back on Grovedale by edging them out in a tense grade 2 match, while Moriac comfortably saw off a brave Anglesea in grade 3.

Clifton Springs won the grade 4 flag comfortably over Wandana Heights White, but Ocean Grove needed to pull everything out before eventually accounting for Barwon Heads in grade 5.

Not all that much in it in grade 6, with Eastern Districts taking it out from Clifton Springs and although, geographically, they are far apart, Teesdale and Portarlington fought out a well played grand final in grade 7, honours eventually to Teesdale. A strong Hamlyn Park combo were just too accomplished for a solid Barwon Heads team in grade 8, while in grade 9, the two Surfcoast teams battled it out for club glory, with the Black team winning every set. Sounds easy, but there was actually not much in it on games.

Grades 10, 11 and 12 were all one-sided matches, with Bannockburn defeating Drysdale in grade 10, Leopold dominant over Belmont Uniting in grade 11 and Centre Court much too solid for Moolap in grade 12.

Ladies presentation day will be held at Federal Mills Cafe Restaurant in Mackey Street, North Geelong, on Tuesday June 19 from noon and for those anxious to get started on the next season – well, it all kicks off again on Tuesday July 17. Check all results and details on the Match Centre website.
