THIS year’s West Coast Wax Up is shaping up to be the biggest and best in the event’s history, with surfers set to hit the water tomorrow morning at Point Impossible.
More than 50 of the state’s best surfers will take to the water tomrrow with ultimate state bragging rights on the line.

The third edition of the surfing festival got under way yesterday (Thursday, February 5) with a live forum featuring local shapers Jordan Nobel, Will Solly and Noel Shanuhan.
A star-studded field is expected to hit the water including multiple time Victorian champions Ben Considine, Bea Conroy, Molly Powell, Matthew Lumley and Andrew Burgan.

Hot on their heels will be reigning local club champions Matthew Shay, Ziggy Robertson and Phillip Island surfers Ebony Maier and Thomas Fahey.
The Wax Up will also draw visitors from interstate with former WSL competitor, commentator and longboarding guru Matt ‘The Waxhead’ Chojnacki making an appearance.

More than $3,000 of prize money will be up for grabs for men’s and women’s podium getters.
WCWU event director Glenn Barry said it was shaping up to be an incredible festival of longboard surfing.

“We are fully firing and everything is going really great in terms of preparations.
“We haven’t had a day yet in the event’s history where we know there is waves all day, but this year looks like the year with three-foot swell and westerly and south-westerly winds. It’ll certainly be contestable.

“The field of surfers will no doubt elevate the level of surfing in our state and we can’t wait to see everyone take to the water.”
Following the surfing action will be what is being touted as “the biggest afterparty longboarding has ever seen.”
Presented by Stone and Wood, the event will feature live music from Floodlights, Surf Hat, Bones & Jones, Savage Honey, Oh! Daisy and live DJ’s.

“We’ve sold over 700 tickets which is just crazy,” Mr Barry added.
“It’ll be a shoulder-to-shoulder party in there that’s for sure.”
An opening night world premiere of new local surf film Force Majeure at the Barwon Heads Town Hall is set for tonight (Friday, February 6).
