Backyard set up a real hit
YOU’VE probably seen all varieties of man caves, tennis courts, or swimming pools in backyards, but one Epsom man has taken it to the next level with his very own national standard table tennis court.
Fitted out with professional-quality flooring, wall padding and technology including Go-Pro cameras and an optional ball launcher, Gary Fitzgerald’s set up is enough to make any fan of the sport envious.
“I love table tennis, not that I’m a fantastic player by any means, I just love it,” said Mr Fitzgerald, who is the C Grade coordinator of the Bendigo and District Table Tennis Association.
“I thought in my retirement if I can’t go somewhere and play, I can practice here. I wanted to make it more than just a table in a shed or garage, we’ve all had those in the past.
“I went overboard at a fair bit of expense, but I had the opportunity to do it and I thought this would be it.”
Mr Fitzgerald said he played the sport as a teenager, before entering local competitions in Lilydale in his 30s. Life got in the way, but after 30 years and a move to Bendigo, he now enjoys the sport whenever he wants.
“I’ve got coaching qualifications too so I can help, especially young kids,” he said. “I want to try help young kids get involved.”
His court was especially helpful when COVID-19 restrictions limited the amount of people allowed to play at the Bendigo Badminton and Table Tennis Complex in Eaglehawk, and players utilised his space.
Every Friday afternoon, members from U3A Bendigo also come to Mr Fitzgerald’s court for a bit of fun and exercise.
He is currently renovating the space to include bathroom facilities.
