AN event aimed at helping residents clear out chemicals being stored, but no longer needed, is returning to Bendigo later this month.

Known as Detox your Home and run by Sustainability Victoria, Saturday, 26 October will enable a range of chemicals to be dropped off for free.

Common products such as weedkiller, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, cosmetics, and cooking oil are all materials harmful to the environment and should not be placed in kerbside bins or tipped down the drain,” a statement from Sustainability Victoria said.

“Pouring household chemicals down the drain will pollute our waterways, harm animals and vegetation and contaminate our water supply.

“On average Victorians who use the program bring an average of 23 kilograms of waste for disposal, with two thirds of people reporting they’ve had their toxic materials for over five years.”

Over the 27 years the Detox Your Home program has been running 7000 tonnes of chemicals and 10,000 tonnes of “hard-to-recycle” waste had been accepted by Sustainability Victoria.

The Bendigo event will take place from 9am to 2pm on Wednesday, 26 October at the Bendigo Livestock Exchange, Lot 2 Wallenjoe Road, Huntly.
