THIS Fathers’ Day, the annual Run For Dad is back on at the Bendigo Racecourse after two years of cancellations.

Raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, the event is in its ninth year and has been organised by the Goldfields’ Rotary clubs and Athletics Bendigo.

Organising committee member Keith Macdonald said the runs is more than a fundraiser.

“Its aim is to get people out and active and raise money… but also get out that message that it’s important men have that annual check-up and if something isn’t quite right not to go ‘oh that’s alright’, but go and get it checked,” he said.

Participants can choose between a 7.5-kilometre run or a 3.75-kilometre walk/run at the Bendigo Racecourse, with the route taking runners around the venue and onto the straight.

Mr Macdonald said the traditional superhero dress-up theme is back.

“Often dad or grandpa is a hero, and they’ve had an issue with their prostate… so it’s dress up as your hero to protect your hero,” Mr Macdonald said.

“In the past we’ve normally had around 250 maybe a bit more in participation so it’s been, not a big event, but a successful event. We’ve raised about $45,00.”

On the day, the Eaglehawk Citizens’ Brass Band are set to provide entertainment, while local Rotary clubs will put on a free breakfast and there’ll also be a coffee van on site.

Run for Dad is on Sunday, 4 September. To register visit runfordad.com.au.
