BALLINA State Emergency Service volunteers have spoken with a seniors group at the Richmond Tweed Regional Library about preparing for floods, storms and other emergencies.

Members of the Ballina SES Unit outlined the organisation’s role beyond disaster response and shared practical safety advice residents can use at home.

SES group leader Karen Johnson said the session aimed to clarify the range of work undertaken by volunteers and help residents better understand local risks.

“A lot of people think the SES only turns up during storms and floods, but we do so much more than that,” Johnson said.

“We help with local searches, welfare checks, general land rescue jobs and supporting other emergency services across the community.”

Johnson said the presentation also focused on practical preparedness, including the use of warning apps and the importance of having a personal emergency plan.

“This was about explaining our broader role and giving residents practical tools they can use, including apps they can download to stay informed,” she said.

The session covered evacuation planning, setting trigger points for leaving early and ensuring family or friends are aware of individual plans.

Johnson said community information sessions had become increasingly important following the 2022 floods and with new residents moving into the area.

“Some people were surprised to learn about the range of jobs we attend,” she said.

“For example, if a tree blocks an entry or exit, we’ll make it safe and clear access, but we don’t remove the tree entirely.”

The next seniors session at the Ballina library will be hosted by the Alstonville Historical Society.
