STUDENTS and teachers at Wollongbar TAFE have restored and donated a rare 1986 Holden VL Commodore that could raise up to $50,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

The restored vehicle, originally part of the iconic Waltons Department Store fleet, was displayed at the North Coast Show and Shine before being officially handed over for auction.

Automotive students contributed across multiple trades, including mechanical, panel beating, paint and upholstery, gaining hands-on experience while working on the project.

The restoration provided real-world training while preserving an important piece of Australian motoring history.

Kirk Trease, head teacher of automotive at TAFE NSW Wollongbar, said the car held personal significance for him, having serviced it himself as a young mechanic in the 1990s.

“The car was stripped back to a bare shell and rebuilt better than new,” Trease said.

“Over the years, the restoration was broken down and timed to align with what the students were learning at the time.

The car restoration project started in 2015 and has provided real-world training while preserving an important piece of Australian motoring history.

“This project helped build skills, and it also gave the students a sense of ownership, pride, and respect.

“They got the satisfaction of knowing their work will contribute to a better outcome for their community by raising funds for the helicopter service.”

With Holden ceasing production in Australia in 2017, the project has taken on added significance as a tribute to Australian-made cars.

The vehicle has been returned to its original finish using premium PPG coatings and detailed to show-quality standards.

The engine, interior, trim, glass and electrics have all been restored, replaced or refurbished.

“This has been a long journey, and we’re incredibly grateful to the staff and students at TAFE NSW Wollongbar for their unwavering commitment,” Westpac rescue helicopter regional officer John Bancroft said.

“The funds raised from the auction will directly support the lifesaving work of our rescue helicopter crews here at our Lismore base.”
