GBEA winner – Emerging Business – Sycle

October 17, 2024 BY

Sycle is committed to working with its clients to reduce their carbon footprint, repurpose salvageable waste, and protect the earth's natural resources.

Waste management company Sycle is on a mission to solve the big problems that matter.

Driven by a desire to protect future generations through smart and sustainable waste solutions, the business works to divert construction and demolition waste from landfill and repurpose it into new building materials.

Sycle operates out of its waste recovery and landfill sites in Fyansford and Avalon, and with a targeted recovery rate of 90 per cent, accepts a wide variety of waste streams, from concrete and asphalt to tyres and topsoil.

Its Fyansford facility is also licenced to receive and dispose of asbestos.

According to the business, less than 12 per cent of all construction materials presently come from recycled goods.

It’s a figure the Sycle team is striving to increase – a mission it believes is possible with the right strategy, investment and vision.

Impressed with its commitment to rethinking traditional supply chains and the impact the business has already made on the industry, the judges have awarded Sycle the Emerging Business Award, sponsored by The Gordon.

The award celebrates a business community newcomer that has been operating for less than three years but has already made a significant impact.

Judge Christine Smith said Sycle’s commitment to environmentally friendly waste management is revolutionising the industry and setting new standards for sustainability.

“The company’s innovative approach not only reduces waste but also transforms it into valuable resources, showcasing a true commitment to a circular economy,” Ms Smith said.

“Sycle’s proactive engagement with local communities highlights their dedication to raising awareness about waste management and environmental responsibility.”

Since it set up its operations, Sycle has also sought to engage with several Geelong-based programs.

The ground maintenance team at its Fyansford site has been engaged through disability support provider genU, while several of its employees have also been hired through rehabilitation program the Power in You project.

On a community level, the business – together with its parent company the Symal Group – sponsors a number of local sporting teams including the Torquay Football Netball Club, the Geelong West Giants, Newtown & Chilwell Football Netball Club and the Lara Tennis Club.

“The collaborative spirit within the team fosters creativity and drives continuous improvement, ensuring that Sycle remains at the forefront of industry advancements,” Ms Smith said.

“With such a strong foundation and a clear vision for the future, Sycle is poised to make a significant impact in the years to come.”
