GBEA winner – Safe and Healthy Business Award – Kennedys Group

October 17, 2024 BY

This year's judging panel said major service provider Kennedys Group has set a "gold standard" for what a safe and healthy business can be.

Safety is a cornerstone of Kennedys Group’s operational ethos.

The business began in 1976 as a small, family-run plumbing operation and over the past 45 years has expanded to become a major service provider in the commercial and industrial plumbing, electrical, metal fabrication and engineering, and asbestos and mould remediation spaces.

To safeguard the health and safety of both its staff and clients, Kennedys Group has developed robust training and practice policies to eliminate hazards and reduce risk on its projects, which often involve unique and high-risk environments.

If accidents, including near misses, do occur, Kennedys Group also has procedures in place to ensure incidents are appropriately investigated to prevent reoccurrence.

With clients ranging from private business to government departments, these comprehensive protocols, along with meticulous planning, allow Kennedys Group to successfully deliver large-scale projects that meet even the most rigorous of requirements.

Now regarded an industry leader in asbestos removal, the business’s safety-first reputation has also led to it collaborating with various authorities, regulatory bodies and government to develop approved codes of practice and safe-work procedures for the removal of asbestos.

It is the business’s hands-on approach to health and safety that most impressed this year’s judging panel and secured Kennedys Group the Safe and Healthy Business Award, sponsored by WorkSafe.

The award recognises a business that has demonstrated an understanding of, and commitment to, protecting the health and safety of their employees and clients.

Kennedys Group was also shortlisted for an additional two awards this year in the medium to large business and advanced manufacturing categories.

Judge Sarah Charleston said Kennedys Group has set “a gold standard” for what a safe and healthy business can be by providing thorough training to all staff and ensuring strict adherence to safety processes and procedures.

“This award recognises their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all employees,” Ms Charleston said.

“Their leadership and team members possess comprehensive understanding of these protocols, ensuring that safety remains a top priority at every level.

“In addition to mandated risk assessments, Kennedys Group actively involves its team in identifying potential hazards, fostering a culture of vigilance and accountability.

“The robust reporting of incidents and near misses within their Integrated Management System (IMS) ensures continuous improvement in safety practices.”

Ms Charleston highlighted Kennedys Group’s training programs, which she said go above and beyond regulatory requirements and incorporate essential certifications, first aid, mental health first aid, along with toolbox meetings, which address ongoing changes in operations and safety procedures.

“It is this holistic approach to safety, health and wellbeing that makes Kennedys Group a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.”
