AFL star Max Gawn is urging families to unplug and reconnect at the 2026 GeelongPort Family Ride, returning to Geelong’s stunning waterfront on January 30.

The Melbourne Demons ruckman, who is again serving as event ambassador, rode in last year’s ride with his wife and young children, and said it was a joyful and unique way for families to get moving together.

“The GeelongPort Family Ride was my first one last year. To see my three-year-old think he was in a race was pretty cool.

“My one-year-old was behind me loving life, and even my wife got a little competitive at times.”

The free event invites families to ride a safe, closed 2km circuit along the Geelong waterfront. Open to all ages and riding abilities, it’s a welcoming and vibrant way to be part of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race weekend.

Balance bikes, training wheels and all kinds of kid-friendly transport are welcome, with riders starting and finishing at Steampacket Gardens and crossing under the official race gantry – just like the pros.

Gawn said the closed circuit was a major highlight.

“Everyone’s booming with smiles from ear to ear – kids and adults included.

“There aren’t many places where you can ride freely and safely as a family without worrying about traffic.”

He’s also passionate about quality time without screens and encourages others to take a break from devices.

“From five till seven when I’m home, I make sure I don’t bring out my phone. I’ve got some pretty good evidence that I’m not being the best father, husband or person when there’s screen time lurking,” he said.

Max Gawn and his wife, Jessica Gawn competed in last year’s GeelongPort Family ride with their two children George and Louis.

“Being outdoors, riding with other families, seeing your kids smile – that’s what it’s all about.”

As a bonus, the first 500 registered kids will receive a free yellow ‘Legend’ T-shirt provided by GeelongPort. The colour celebrates cycling legend Cadel Evans and adds an exciting race-day feel.

“Yellow’s a pretty iconic jersey colour in cycling. The more we can get kids enjoying riding in yellow, the more it empowers the sport and lifestyle,” Gawn said.

The GeelongPort Family Ride takes place on January 30, 2026 from 5.30pm to 7pm.

The ride is completely free, but registration is essential via cadelroadrace.com
