Footy identities to headline luncheon

St Joseph’s Football Netball Club is gearing up to host the region’s first AFL Wildcard Round Luncheon next month.

The community event will be held at GMHBA Stadium on 28 August.

AFL journalist Caroline Wilson, four-time premiership player Isaac Smith and former Collingwood captain and St Joseph’s alumnus Nick Maxwell will feature on the panel, while comedian and broadcaster Lehmo will provide entertainment. Local broadcaster Tom King will serve as MC.

St Joseph’s fundraising committee member John Watts said the club’s annual luncheon had become a longstanding tradition.

“It’s been going for over 20 years now and is a longstanding tradition,” he said.

“It’s normally on Grand Final Eve, but this year we’ve moved it to avoid school holidays.

“No one has done the wildcard before. It’ll be the first one held in Geelong, so we are really excited.

“It’ll get a bit of a different crowd, particularly with having Caroline speaking as well to bring that female angle to sport.”

Watts said the club was hoping to attract about 450 guests.

The funds raised will support the club’s football and netball programs, mental health initiatives and all-abilities programs.

“We’ve got about 1,000 players, so the upkeep for that is solid,” Watts said.

“Proceeds will go a long way in paving the way for the future and allowing the club to continue doing the great work it already is.”
