Bellarine schools in Rotary’s Buddy Seat project
ROTARY has helped six Bellarine primary schools foster kindness and inclusiveness with a new initiative.
A member of the Bellarine North Rotary Club came across a “buddy seat”, which aims to help address bullying, particularly in schools, by giving children who would like a friend or someone to play with somewhere to go.
Club publicity officer Caroline Rickard said her club warmed to the concept and decided to take it on as its next project.
“We approached our local schools with the idea, and they warmly embraced it.
“From there, we committed ourselves to bringing the project to life.”
Buddy Benches have now been installed at the Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Portarlington, St Leonards, St Thomas and Christian College Bellarine primary schools.

The benches have a sign stating “everyone belongs and everyone is important”.
Rickard said the feedback from schools so far had been overwhelmingly positive.
“These seats provide a safe and welcoming space for children to sit, talk, and connect. More importantly, they encourage empathy, support, and friendship among students.
“Our hope is that this small initiative creates a ripple effect – one where bullying becomes less present not only in schools, but in all areas of life.
“By teaching kindness and inclusion early, we help build a brighter, more compassionate future.”
She said Bellarine North Rotary Club was always welcoming new members and fresh ideas.
“If you’re new to the area, have some spare time, or are simply looking to connect and contribute to your community, we would love to meet you.”
