THE Committee for Geelong has announced the appointment of Rebecca Bartel as chair and Brett Winter as deputy chair, following the organisation’s 25th annual general meeting on Thursday last week.

Ms Bartel is the first woman in CfG’s history to hold the position of chair, and replaces Clive Pugh, who served as chair for six years.

As executive director of strategic partnerships at Deakin University, she brings more than 25 years’ experience across corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors, with expertise in strategy and risk, stakeholder engagement, commercialisation and governance.

A graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD), Ms Bartel has served as deputy chair for the past four years.

She is passionate about regional resilience and achieving sustainable, inclusive growth for Geelong over the long term, and is focused on designing Geelong’s best future through collaboration, strategic leadership and data-driven solutions that deliver real community and economic impact.

“Geelong’s future relies on good growth that is inclusive, sustainable and improves quality of life,” Ms Bartel said.

“By working together and maintaining a long-term focus, we can design Geelong’s best future and ensure our city grows well, not just fast.”

The chief executive officer of GeelongPort, Mr Winter’s strong background in infrastructure and economic development, along with his commitment to regional growth and sustainability, aligns with the committee’s strategic priorities.

A passionate advocate for Geelong’s long-term prosperity, he is committed to fostering collaboration between industry, government and community to ensure the region grows in a way that is inclusive, resilient and future-focused.

Mr Winter recently concluded a term on the board of G21 Geelong Region Alliance, where he played a key role in advancing regional priorities.

“It’s a privilege to join Rebecca and Michael in leading the Committee for Geelong at such a pivotal time,” he said.

“As our region continues to grow, it’s vital we harness strategic infrastructure, sustainability and collaboration to ensure that growth delivers lasting community and economic benefits.”

The committee also welcomed the appointment of Richard Hill as finance audit and risk management chair, having served on the board for the past three years; and Barwon Health chief strategy officer Anna Burgess as a new member of the board.

Existing board members Joe Ormeno, Paul Robson and Wes Self were re-elected at the AGM, and Anne O’Loughlin retired from the board.

“Rebecca and Brett are exceptional leaders with a deep understanding of Geelong’s opportunities and challenges. Their combined expertise will strengthen our advocacy and impact across the region,” CfG CEO Michael Johnston said.

“I look forward to continuing to lead the organisation under this new board leadership and am excited to have such high-calibre individuals supporting me in my role.”
