THE City of Greater Geelong has moved to formally adopt Planning Scheme Amendment C465ggee regarding the Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative hub redevelopment.

The planning scheme and the accompanying Planning Permit PP-1013-2023 will pave the way for the development of land at 60-62 Morgan Street and part of 43 The Boulevard, Norlane.

The land will be rezoned from public park and recreation zone to a new special use zone schedule, with the environmental audit overlay applied to manage any potential contaminated land.

The new facility will include a function centre, new buildings and infrastructure and associated car parking across the Morgan Street site.

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the decision reflects Council’s commitment to supporting and improving access to culturally safe services.

“This redevelopment will allow Wathaurong to consolidate its services into a single, modern facility that meets growing community needs,” Cr Kontelj said.

“It’s a project that will deliver long-term social, cultural, and economic benefits for the region.”

Cr Andrew Katos said the redevelopment will meet the need for stronger community connection.

“The Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative North Geelong hub site is an important community gathering place,” he said.

“This is a meaningful step forward in supporting the Wathaurong and the First Nations Community.”

The city will now submit the adopted amendment to the Minister for Planning for final approval and recommend the planning permit be granted.
