Corio brigade celebrates 30-year legacy as CFA issues safety warning about key Christmas gifts
CFA volunteers and local community members gathered to mark the 30th anniversary of the Corio brigade.
The event, held at the Shell Club in Corio, saw over 50 attendees, including CFA Board member Beth Davidson OAM and founding member Steve Waugh.
Corio Captain Benjamin Lane, a dedicated member for two decades, began his journey as a Junior member at the age of 11, driven by his love for fire trucks.
“I liked fire trucks, and they had a Junior program and I joined that. From there I obviously progressed through the ranks,” he said.
Taking on the captain’s role in 2023, Benjamin credits the brigade’s longevity to its committed members.
“It goes back to the members and what they do to support the community,” he said.
Founding member Steve Waugh, who joined the Norlane Fire Brigade at 17 in 1984 before it became the Corio Fire Brigade, has dedicated almost four decades to the CFA.
Now at 56, he reflected on the significant changes in required skills for today’s members.
“I still enjoy it and enjoy the people. You make friends all over the place,” he said.
However, amidst the festivities, the CFA has issued a vital warning.
Fire Rescue Victoria’s Acting Deputy Commissioner, Gavin Rooney, expressed concerns about the prevalence of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries under Christmas trees.
“They occasionally can and do catch alight,” he cautioned.
“In the past three months, Victorian firefighters have been responding to lithium-ion battery fires almost every day.”
Within the past month firefighters attended three major house fires linked to e-bikes and e-bike chargers. In each case, the properties were significantly damaged or destroyed.
Country Fire Authority Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Paul Carrigg said it was important people never modified or tampered with their battery.
“Lithium-ion batteries are energy-dense and contain chemicals,” ACFO Carrigg said.
“When these batteries overheat they can release toxic and highly flammable gases.”
“Stop using or charging the product if you notice strong odours, extreme heat, change in shape, leaking or unusual sounds. Leave the area and call Triple Zero (000) immediately.”
