MOTHER’S Day this Sunday, May 8, comes after two disjointed and isolated years, and Geelong Mums is doing its bit to make this year’s celebration one to remember for those in need.

Local charity Geelong Mums is receiving donations for its Make A Mother’s Day campaign where mothers in need will receive everyday essentials.

“This Mother’s Day is a special one for many people, as some are finally able to celebrate together after a difficult few years,” Geelong Mums chief executive officer Ruth Holdaway said.

“Geelong Mums is encouraging the community to show a local mum in need that they care by making a donation to our Make a Mother’s Day Appeal.”

The Make A Mother’s Day campaign will provide a toiletry bag packed with essentials for mums who might be affected by violence, family breakdown, at risk of homelessness, or living in poverty.

The appeal provides four main ways to donate to Geelong Mums.

People can make a financial donation where $50 will provide support for a mum who might be affected by violence, family breakdown, at risk of homelessness, or living in poverty.

Donors can get together a toiletry bag by dropping off a toiletry bag filled with new and unopened toiletries. Some ideas include a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and soap.

Those looking to give can also make a donation in lieu of a Mother’s Day present or organise a Mother’s Day fundraising event collecting donations for the Make A Mother’s Day campaign.

“Our team of volunteers and staff are certainly looking forward to a somewhat normal year and to coming together again for our Mother’s Day Lunch,” Ms Holdaway said.

“Unfortunately, many of the people supported by Geelong Mums will still not experience a normal Mother’s Day.

“Many are dealing with challenges such as homelessness, family violence or simply struggling to put food on the table.

“The support they receive from Geelong Mums may be the only present they receive and will mean a lot during a challenging time.”

Geelong Mums managed to keep its doors open and, last year alone, supported more than 19,000 babies and children across Victoria.

The Geelong Mums Mother’s Day Lunch is also scheduled to take place tomorrow (Friday, May 6) at Mt Duneed Estate.
