GEELONG has secured the most prestigious seniors tennis event to be played early next year as events return to the region.

The Oceania Regional Senior Tennis Championships will be played at the historic Geelong Lawn Tennis Club from March 4 to 8, 2021.

Around 300 players aged 30 and above will reside in the region for the duration of the five-day competition, bringing new opportunities for local businesses.

Major Events Chair Ron Nelson said the competition will provide a much-needed boost to Geelong’s accommodation and hospitalities industries.

“Major events play a hugely important role in our local economy and they’ve been sadly missed during 2020,” Cr Nelson said.

The confirmation of the event was another step forward for Geelong on the road to recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s so positive to see a tournament of this size and stature coming to Geelong in March and we look forward to welcoming competitors from near and far.”

Geelong Lawn Tennis Club President Bob Spurling said they are committed to delivering an unforgettable event.

“Our aim will be to create a lasting impression of not only the tennis experience but also to encourage all visitors to spend some time exploring the great attractions our region offers,” he said.

The competition is part of the International Tennis Federation Senior Tour and is the second highest ranking tournament in the series.

The major event will bring in a number of international competitions providing more relaxed travel restrictions.

“We will have the opportunity to showcase the Greater Geelong region to a host of visitors, many here for the first time, and we’re committed to delivering an event of the highest standard,” Mr Spurling said.
