THE future of community football will be placed in local hands via the Barwon Regional Council.

AFL Victoria has opened expressions of interest for the new council as part of the changing model of community football governance.

The council will provide direct guidance to AFL Victoria on the administration, growth, and sustainability of football in the Barwon region.

This includes advising and providing recommendations of changes to regional rules and by-laws, competition structures, participation, club development and growth opportunities.

AFL Victoria’s Barwon regional manager Lisa Patterson said applicants from a broad range of backgrounds are welcome and they do not need to be involved with an AFL Barwon club.

Areas of expertise being sought include governance, strategic leadership, legal, risk management, infrastructure, stakeholder engagement, marketing and communications, and sports administration.

“This is an opportunity to have a genuine impact on the direction of the game, support local clubs and leagues and help ensure the ongoing strength and sustainability of football within the region,” Patterson said.

“Ultimately, if you are passionate about community sport and believe you can contribute at a strategic level, this is a valuable chance to be part of a governance model that will shape the future of football in Barwon.”

Patterson said the formation of the council marked an important step in strengthening governance and ensured local knowledge and expertise directly inform edstrategic decision-making.

The council will also allow for greater opportunity for the region’s most pressing concerns to be addressed.

Local voices and experts have the connection to the Barwon region to understand the unique challenges it faces.

“Establishing a regional council will strengthen community football by providing clear governance, local insight and greater accountability in decision-making,” Patterson said.

“It ensures that decisions are made with a strong understanding of the region’s needs, while remaining aligned to AFL Victoria’s broader strategy.

“Ultimately, this leads to more informed, consistent and transparent decisions that support participation, club sustainability and the long-term success of football across the Barwon region.”

The council will comprise between three and five members, who will be appointed for a three-year term.

Patterson encouraged anyone who feels qualified to submit an expression of interest for the opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of community football.

Applications are now being accepted and require submission of a resume, cover letter and completed expression of interest nomination application.

Applications close on 17 April. For a full position description and application details, head to aflbarwon.com.au
