Local smallgoods company brings home the bacon

BARWON Valley Smallgoods is now set on state recognition after being honoured with the region’s best smoked bacon.

Based in Norlane, the small goods company supplies award-winning products to supermarkets, large scale delis, retail butchers and restaurants throughout the region.

Making a name for himself, owner Damian Batties has come out on top at the regional Victorian South West awards held by the Australia Meat Industry Council.

The 2021 title comes as Mr Batties’ fifth win in the last six years, taking out awards for a variety of his products.
“We were very happy to receive the gold medal for our bacon,” he said.

“It is an annual competition that we enter every year, and it is something that we a proud of.”

This year the team at Barwon Valley Smallgoods has received gold for its smoked bacon and silver for its boneless ham, however past accolades have included recognition for a variety of products including a range of European sausages.

“We are a small operator, we take a bit more care in our products,” Mr Batties said.

“It is all handmade and not mass produced, unlike bigger companies ours is more boutique so a lot of love goes into it.”

While the recognition is appreciated, Mr Batties said the best part of what he does is experimenting with his recipes and gaining loyal customers.

“We have a strong following in the marketplace for our small goods,” he said.

“People are introduced to our products and they tend to become loyal customers and keep coming back not just for one product but a range of items.

“We like to hang our hat on a very loyal customer base.”

With annual awards piling in for the smallgoods company, they have experienced organic growth each year with more customers falling in love with the variety of smoked products, unique recipes and award-winning tastes.

The state titles are anticipated to be held in November this year.
