A Geelong father has organised a community fundraiser this weekend inspired by his three-year-old daughter, who uses Auslan as she navigates complex health challenges.

The Intuitive Day Out, organised by Shaun McLeod of Intuitive Garden Design, will return for its third year at the Breakwater Hotel this Sunday, 15 March

It will raise funds for Geelong Auslan Connect, which runs social gatherings and events where people can learn and practise Auslan in a relaxed setting.

McLeod’s daughter Ode was born prematurely and continues to face medical challenges, including feeding difficulties that require hospital support. As she grows, Auslan has become an important way to communicate with the world around her.

“I wouldn’t be who I am without her,” McLeod said. “I’ve definitely learnt so much about the human interaction and being inclusive and compassionate and seeing people for who they are.”

This year’s event will feature live music from instrumental four-piece Axis Mundi, who describe their sound as “extra-terrestrial surf jazz”, and Bellarine DJ Rob Major, who will supply the house and funk beats throughout the afternoon.

The fundraiser’s format has grown from McLeod’s own love of live music and community gatherings.

After spending years immersed in Melbourne’s gig scene, he began hosting small shows in Geelong, first in his own backyard before expanding into public venues.

Over the years, Intuitive Day Out has also reflected the family’s experiences navigating the health system. Previous events have supported Barwon Health and Ambulance Victoria, both of which played important roles during Ode’s early months.

McLeod said the goal was to create a relaxed space where people could connect and support a local cause. He loves seeing old friends run into each other at his events.

“That makes it feel so worth it to bring people into a safe space and make them feel free to do whatever they want, especially if there’s really good music playing,” he said.

Finn’s Oyster Bar will serve freshly shucked oysters, while children can enjoy face painting, a sandpit play area and a solar telescope operated by members of the Astronomical Society of Victoria’s Geelong group, allowing visitors to safely view the sun.

Auslan interpreters will also be present on the day to help ensure the event remains accessible. Wheelchair access is available.

The Intuitive Day Out runs from 1pm to 5pm this Sunday, 15 March. Tickets are $20 via Humanitix, with children admitted free.
