LARA’S bowling greens are ready to regain their reputation as some of the best in the region thanks to a funding boost set to benefit more than 1,000 players.

The Lara Bowling Club, located on Alkara Avenue, has been named the recipient of an $85,700 grant as part of the city’s Community Grants program for 2021-22 to refurbish its depleted Ladies Green.

“All of our bowlers bowl on this green and we greatly appreciate this grant from the City of Greater Geelong council to help with the cost of its refurbishment,” club treasurer Elke van Baar said.

Members had fully funded the neighbouring Max Draper Green prior to the funding announcement, leaving the club in need of resurfacing its Ladies Green, originally named as a way to recognise the voluntary work of its female members.

The reparations to the Ladies Green will aim to provide a consistent bowling experience by removing runs and holes on the surface as well as a fresh new green colour.

“The new green will greatly improve our playing conditions and, together with the Max Draper Green, which was renewed in 2021, will give us two excellent playing surfaces for all to enjoy,” Ms van Baar said.

The club hopes to attract new members as a result of the new renovations while remaining competitive. It will also host more community-based bowling events, tournaments and social events moving forward.

Lara-based city councillor Kylie Grzybek said the funding will provide a huge boost to the club and its committed members.

“This upgrade will ensure the Lara Bowling Club’s future success by providing a smoother playing experience, attracting new members, retaining existing members and allowing for more community events to be held,” Cr Grzybek said.

“Bowls is a popular sport here in Lara and its social and physical benefits can’t be overstated, particularly during the pandemic.”

The city’s community infrastructure grants are set to total $3 million during 2022.
