Tensions boiled over at Ellimatta Reserve on Saturday following a heated reserves clash between Anglesea and Newcomb.

Moments after the final siren, Newcomb’s Jim Hall threw a punch at Anglesea player Sean Hermann, sending him to the ground.

Hermann is understood to have avoided serious injury but was left shaken by the incident.

The incident is believed to have been reported by an umpire who witnessed it.

The altercation was captured in a series of photographs shared to social media on Saturday evening.

In a statement, Newcomb president Matt Farrow condemned the behaviour, reiterating the club’s “zero-tolerance stance on violence”.

“Any behaviour that falls short of the standards expected of our players, officials and supporters will not be accepted either on or off the field under any circumstances,” he said.

“At this time, the club will not be making any further comment and will allow the appropriate judicial process to proceed without interference.”

Anglesea declined to comment.

The altercation followed a period of pushing and shoving between players, which resulted in a 50m penalty and a goal to Anglesea.

Newcomb went onto defeat Anglesea by one point, 60 to 59.
