Shelter now: Out-of-control grassfire moves towards Avalon College
An out-of-control grassfire burns near Avalon Road as a shelter now emergency warning is issued for Avalon, Corio and Lara.
Residents across Avalon, Corio and Lara have been urged to take shelter immediately as an out-of-control grassfire travelling towards Avalon College burns along Avalon Road.
A shelter now emergency warning was issued at about 3.20pm via Vic Emergency, advising people in the warning area that it was too late to leave and that the safest option was to shelter indoors.
The warning confirms the grassfire is not yet under control and is moving in the direction of the school, with authorities stressing the risk posed by intense radiant heat, which can cause serious harm before flames arrive.
A spokesperson from Fire Rescue Victoria confirmed emergency services were currently battling the blaze.
They were called to the incident at about 2.20pm after reports of a paddock fire. The incident is not yet deemed under control.
Today’s conditions are compounding the danger, with temperatures soaring above 40C in Avalon and strong winds of around 56kmh, with gusts up to 63kmh.
Residents have been instructed to move indoors immediately, close all doors, windows and vents, and turn off cooling systems.
People sheltering are advised to remain in a room with two exits, including one to the outside, so they can monitor conditions and escape if necessary.
Those travelling have been told not to enter the warning area, while anyone already driving within it has been advised to slow down, turn on headlights and seek safety if conditions worsen.
The alert warns that grassfires can start and spread quickly and are extremely dangerous under current conditions.
