The 2022 Tim Gates Classic will be held this Sunday (January 9) at the Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), the 11th annual event in memory of the former life saver.

After last year’s event was forced to go virtual due to COVID, Fairhaven SLSC president Nancy Joseph says “we’re just delighted to be able to have the event back on the beach”.

The event is held each year to honour the memory of Fairhaven lifesaver Tim Gates, who died in 2008, aged 52, after being pulled from the water at the beach having suffering a head injury while paddling a Malibu board.

The Tim Gates Foundation honours his memory by assisting young members to build their competition skills, leadership and learning. It also contributes financially to the support of the club and its members.

Online registrations are now open for the beach return runs from Fairhaven to Eastern View (5km) and Fairhaven to Spouts Creek (10km), and competitors are advised that entries on the day are not permitted.

A COVIDSafe event, all participants must be fully vaccinated and are being advised that T-shirt and race bibs will be available for collection from the club after online entries and payments are completed.

The 10km run starts at 11am and the 5km run at 11.05am.
