A BELLARINE Athletics Club pole vaulter took the region’s only win at the Surf Coast Classic earlier this month, as athletes from across the state gathered in sweltering conditions to put the new Landy Field upgrade through its paces.

Lachlan Burns secured the pole vault win at the January 4 event with a five-metre leap, besting Nunawading’s David Thomson (4.6m) and unattached competitor Ryan Shearman (4.4m).

The temperature was already above 30 degrees Celsisu by the time the Classic’s first event, the 5000m race, got under way and continued to rise, reaching a scorching 36 degrees later in the day.

About 50 athletes, split between four separate races, hit the track for the 5,000m event, which saw unassigned athlete Reece Edwards top the pack with a time of 14 minutes and 41 seconds.

Chilwell’s Evander Scott (14 minutes and 50 seconds) took second and Deakin’s Liam Coughlan (15 minutes and 15 seconds) took fourth.

The 10,000m race was dominated by Nathan Stoate (Bendigo Harriers) who took the crown in 29 minutes and 55 seconds, leading Frankston’s Ned Verwey (33 minutes and 27 seconds) and Deakin’s Ryan

Crameri (33 minutes and 41 seconds).

Emma Berg (South Bendigo) was victorious in the shot put with a 16.5m throw, while the region’s best shot put contender Benjamin Day (Corio) took fifth with a throw on 10.37m.

Day also secured third in the long jump (6.23m) event, falling short of Amiru Chandrasena’s (Casey Cardinia) winning 7.42m leap.
