Humphries, Stengle selected in Indigenous All-Stars squad
GEELONG emerging talent Lawson Humphries is excited by the prospect of following in the footsteps of his heroes.
Humphries and Cats teammate Tyson Stengle have been selected in the squad for the AFL Indigenous All-Stars pre-season match against Fremantle, which will be played at Perth’s Optus Stadium on February 15
Humphries said he was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent his culture and family.
“Growing up, I admired players like Adam Goodes, Lewis Jetta, and Sonny (Michael Walters), who inspired me to play footy. To now be a part of the All-Stars is something I’m truly proud of, especially sharing this experience with a close teammate in Tyson Stengle,” the 21-year-old defender said.
“Being able to play alongside some of the league’s best, and players who have played a pivotal role in driving social change both in society and within the AFL, is a real privilege.
“This opportunity will be a great learning experience for me as I deepen my connections within the AFL and gain a better understanding of both culture and the game.”
Humphries grew up in the Pilbara region of Western Australia before being drafted by the Cats at pick 63 in the 2023 AFL draft.
“Being a Kimberley boy that grew up in the Pilbara, to be able to represent my culture and background surrounded by friends and family in the stands is something I won’t take for granted,” he said.
“Being so far away it’s hard for them to watch my games, so to play in front of them whilst representing them is exciting, and to do it against the team my family barracked for makes it even more special.”
After debuting in round 16 last season, Humphries enjoyed a stellar run across half-back for the Cats, playing in both of their finals.
Stengle, a crafty small forward who hails from South Australia, played in Geelong’s 2022 premiership triumph and was also awarded an All Australian blazer that year.
