GEELONG United Basketball (GUB) has officially phased out its old moniker, bringing junior and senior players under the name Geelong United.

GUB announced its completed branding change from ‘Supercats’ to ‘United’ last Thursday, following a gradual transition to the latter dating back to the start of 2023’s winter season.

The Supercats name was first adopted by the association in 1988, when Geelong had a side in the National Basketball League.

GUB chief executive officer Mark Neeld said while it is exciting to move forward under the Geelong United brand, it is important to remember the rich history of basketball in Geelong.

“The Supercats name, which has been a big part of basketball in Geelong, is still independently owned, and we thank the owners for allowing us to use it for as long as we have,” Neeld said.

“Our aim going forward is to forge our own identity while paying tribute to the past.

“The high-level history of both the Geelong Supercats and Corio Bay Stingrays is now reflected in our GUB pathways logo, which recognises what brought us to this elite level of basketball in Geelong.”

The completed change also ensures Victorian Junior Basketball League teams ranging from Under 12s through to Under 20s, and then through to Big V Youth League and NBL1 teams, will all now be known as Geelong United, placing all players throughout all levels under the same name.

GUB said in a statement: “With a bright future ahead, Geelong United Basketball is dedicated to continuing its mission, promoting lifelong activity, and under the GUB banner everyone can be united in doing so.”
