THE Golden Plains Shire is seeking public feedback on a plan to lease part of its Rokewood depot for use as a mobile telecommunications facility site.

The Shire wants to lease land on the western boundary of its depot in Kuruc-a-Ruc Road to Amplitel Pty Ltd for 20 years.

Amplitel, part of the Telstra Group, would erect a telecommunications facility there to improve network coverage and enhance data speeds for mobile phone and internet users.

It put the proposal out for public comment last week because the Local Government Act demands that leases for longer than 10 years be open to consultation.

Golden Plains mayor Owen Sharkey said establishing a mobile telecommunications facility in Rokewood would improve connectivity for residents, local businesses and visitors.

“We are seeking community feedback on the proposed lease which will be the first step in establishing a mobile telecommunications facility in Rokewood with the aim of improving mobile and internet connectivity in the region,” he said.

“Improving mobile connectivity will have wide-ranging benefits for residents, businesses and visitors in Rokewood while also enhancing community safety with emergency services agencies.”

The period for commenting on the plan will run until 5pm on Friday 6 February and submissions can be made online at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/consultations
