WHEN it comes to pasture, Lisa Miller is an expert in the field.

The specialist research and extension officer with Southern Farming Systems (SFS) is now preparing to share some of that expertise at an upcoming Women on Farms Workshop.

The program is being delivered by SFS with support from the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority and the federal Natural Heritage Trust’s Climate-Smart Agriculture program.

A series of free sessions aimed at women on the land are lined up to run between July and October.

Set for Tuesday 21 July, the first session is titled 101 Plant Biology and is being facilitated by Miller who has been conducting research and extension for SFS for the last 13 years.

The upcoming hands-on session will take place from 10.30am to 1.30pm at the SFS Rokewood Trial site on the Rokewood-Shelford Road and will focus on soil, pasture and livestock systems.

“The upcoming session is open to all women at any stage of their farming journey,” an SFS spokesperson said.

“Southern Farming Systems has been involved with the Corangamite Rural Women’s Network through the Corangamite CMA since 2018.

“Our initial workshops where very popular, around the basics of farming to empower women on farms with the knowledge and confidence to ask questions in their farming business.

“Women are often seen as an important member of the farming business, but not necessarily the primary decision maker or operator.

“There is a new generation of women on farms that could benefit from another round of knowledge sharing and networking.”

Registration is required to attend the upcoming session, that includes lunch, with more details through SFS.

Another session focussed on Farming, Family and Future is set for 8 September at the Inverleigh Bowls Club, with a third being arranged for 27 October.
