Shelford tree planting aims to improve amenity, foster connection

ALL green-thumbs are invited to be part of a Geelong Landcare Network (GLN) community tree planting day at the Leigh River in Shelford this weekend.

On Saturday 25 July, 1,500 plants will be put into the ground to boost the environment in the Shelford Recreation Reserve area.

“The Leigh River is very beautiful with some big old river red gums and very scenic spots,” Elissa Ashton-Smith from GLN said.

“It also suffers from invasive weed species and rabbits, as well as erosion and degradation due to the sediment that moves through the system, a legacy of historical mining activities.

“This tree planting event will help to improve amenity and foster connection to this green space.”

Trees, shrubs, grasses and rushes that are indigenous to the Leigh River will be planted, including river red gum, blackwood, golden wattle and she oak.

Ashton-Smith said planting working bees are popular, but there is always need for more volunteers.

“People who participate in a tree planting event often come back for another go, because they discover that it’s an enjoyable and meaningful thing to do,” she said.

“Tree planting is a really good mood-booster, and something different to do on a winter day when ordinarily you might not be motivated to get outside.

“There’s something satisfying about getting your hands in the soil and planting seedlings, especially when you are by a river where there’s different birds to see and hear.”

Funding for the project is from the state Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action’s Green Links program, while the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority is managing the funding and planning.

The free event runs from 9am until 4pm, meeting at Shelford Cricket Club, 1 The Parade Road.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided free of charge.
