Froling bound for Capitals

SELKIRK Ballarat Rush forward Alicia Froling will move to the ACT at the conclusion of the NBL1 South season, after signing with WNBL side the University of Canberra Capitals.

While set to return to the nation’s top-flight competition, Froling has an Australian Institute of Sport training background, played college basketball in Dallas, Texas for Southern Methodist Mustangs, a stint in the Queensland Basketball League, as well as two years with the Bendigo Spirit in the WNBL.

Having had a taste of many teams, styles of gameplay, and coaching, the 191-centermetre forward said the Capitals are a “good fit.”

“I know the coach Paul Goriss really well. He was my coach whilst I was at the AIS and was also the coach of the Australian under-19 World Championship team I was in, so I know his style of play,” Froling said.

“My sister, Keely, played there for four years, and she had a lot of success there. I know a lot of the girls, and it’s a really good championship culture, so I think it will be really good for my all-round game.”

Basketball is in the blood for the 25-year-old athlete, whose parents and three siblings have all been professional players.

Froling’s sights are set on winning a championship with her new teammates in the nation’s capital, and hopes she’ll have the opportunity to battle the best of the best on the world stage.

“My ultimate goal is the Olympics in a couple of years. I’ll just see how I go and develop my game in Canberra. It’s the best place for me.”

Returning to the WNBL after an injury, she’s valued The Rush’s targeted support.

“Eric Hayes, our coach, has worked with me individually on my shot and a lot of my skills, so it’s a good environment here where I’ve been able to develop,” Froling said.
