THE second day of play in this year’s interrupted Ballarat District Bowls Division grand finals returned to the greens on Saturday following the postponement of several matches due to the heavy rains the previous week.

Creswick’s Division 3 side claimed grand final honours after a rain extended match last Saturday.

In final day action Creswick’s Division 3 side won in a tight contest over Ballan at Central Wendouree bowling club at the weekend. Creswick were seven shots up the previous week when the game was stopped.

Ballan restarted well, leaving Creswick to play catch-up bowls for the early part of the recommenced game.

There were only a few shots in the contest keeping the onlooking crowd well entertained, until the last end where Ballan held three shots to bring the game level with both skippers yet to play the final bowls for the day.

Creswick’s skipper John Matusik played the bowl of the game playing his shot between the nest of Ballan rocks in the head and trailing the jack back for two, earning a five-shot overall win for the ‘Wickers.

Both Creswick and Ballan had two rinks up and the winning margin of nine on John Matusik’s green was the deciding factor.

In Division 1, City Oval had a strong win at Ballarat as their bowlers adjusted to the heavier green early.

The momentum was maintained throughout the match with the club winning with all rinks up.

Wayne Roberts foursome had a commanding 19-shot win over Midland’s David Speechley, while the young Midland’s skipper Jacob Croft narrowly lost out by a single shot to Keneth Macgrath.

Also at Ballarat Linton’s Division 4 side also got the job done with a comfortable 18-shot win over BMS.

Chris Fletcher’s rink’s 16-shot win was a deciding factor in leading Linton to victory, with BMS Stephen Bryron’s rink scoring a nine-shot win and being the only rink up on their side.

In the finals played at Webbcona Victoria Bowling Club took out the Premier Division, having lead from the start, was challenged by Ballarat in the later stages of the game but retained a sufficient margin to go through to win this year’s title by six shots.

Aaron Wood’s rink had a six-shot win for Ballarat but this was offset by equivalent half-dozen-shot wins in both Noel Verlinden and Wayne Lynch rinks to get the Big V over the line.

Finally in Division 6, BMS took the win over the Ballarat by nine shots with BMS’ Ron Walker stepping up into the skippers role on his rink for the second day of the final making the difference. His rink took out a 15-shot win that ensured the team’s success.

The game concluded with both teams having two rinks up and BMS scoring 78 shots to Ballarat’s 69.

In the grand finals that were completed on the previous weekend Ballarat North won in Division 2 over Clunes, Midlands Golf won Division 5 over Sebastopol, BMS won Division 7 over Linton and City Oval 2 beat City Oval 1 in Division 8.
