JUST weeks after the opening of the new disc golf course in Victoria Park, the attraction has sparked discussions about the possibility of initiating Ballarat’s own club.

Having garnered a significant amount of use from locals and tourists, visiting South Australian representative for Australian Disc Golf, Ryan Nicholson, said he was stunned to meet so many people using the facility.

“The course is really impressive, it’s Victoria’s first 18 basket course, pretty much all of the other courses in Victoria only have the 9 baskets,” he said.

“This course has 18 permanent baskets plus an additional nine to make an ultimate layout for new players and large events.

“When I visited, I was blown away that there were so many locals already playing and of course it’s only been a couple of weeks.”

With high levels of involvement, Mr Nicolson said the City should consider setting up a dedicated disc golf club for Ballarat players to join.

“It’s really positive to see because there’s already a good Ultimate scene in Ballarat which is like a sister sport to disc golf so that will tie in well,” he said.

“From my experience, I started Mount Gambier Disc Golf Club and we started that before we even had a permanent installation but having a course in the ground ready to go would be really exciting.

“Some of those locals who enjoy the course should look to firing up a club and start running regular local competitions.”
