MEMBERS of Golden Plains Soccer Club are looking for players to help fill gaps in some of their junior and senior squads.

Last month the club called out for additional openings in their under 11 girls side as well as their senior women’s, and under 11 and under 15 boys.

Club president Anthony Vanjek said their need for new players is about rounding out their growing squads.

“It’s to help make those teams viable,” he said. “The under 11s are nine a side. We’ve got about 10-ish and need a couple more to help out in that regard.

“Another thing is we have one 11s girls team and we created a second under 11s boys team because we had a lot of people interested so we’re stretching ourselves a little at the moment.

“At the moment we’re taking players out of their teams to help fill others so there’ll be some who play two games in a morning or day.

“We want to create these teams outright because occasionally people can’t make it. Everyone’s busy with life and so we want to pump those numbers up how we can.”

Mr Vanjek estimated the squads have more than 30 players overall and about two to three additional members are needed for each side.

The club currently has between 200 and 250 members and Mr Vanjek said its continued growth is a boost for the community.

“We’re always looking to expand our teams and it’s good for the community to have kids playing sport and it creates a real social environment for everyone,” he said.

“We’ve got really great facilities now. We’ve got full-pitched senior grounds and our building in the last two years or so was extended to have female-friendly changerooms.”

Training for women is on Tuesdays and Thursdays with under 11 girls practicing from 5pm to 6pm and seniors between 5.30pm and 7pm.

Boys’ training occurs on Wednesdays and Fridays from 5pm to 6.30pm.
