A NEW offshore artificial reef has been installed off Ballina, with a second set to be deployed off Coffs Harbour in the coming weeks.
The reef sits about 3.5 kilometres offshore from Patchs Beach in 32 metres of water and is designed to replicate a natural reef environment.
Fish are expected to begin colonising the structure within a year, with species such as mackerel, snapper and mulloway likely to be attracted.
The project is funded through the Recreational Fishing Trust and Marine Estate Management Strategy, with each reef costing $1.35 million.
The installations bring the total number of offshore artificial reefs along the NSW coast to 13.
Minister for agriculture and regional NSW Tara Moriarty said the reefs would expand fishing opportunities for locals and visitors.
“The new Offshore Artificial Reefs at Ballina and Coffs Harbour are set to become a major drawcard, providing fantastic fishing opportunities for locals and visitors eager to catch a variety of fish species.”
Minister for the North Coast Janelle Saffin said the reefs would support local businesses and tourism.
“This is a big win for the North Coast. These reefs aren’t just about what’s happening under the water; they are about the flow-on effects for our local small businesses.”
