Empowering every learner: the Kalianna difference
THROUGH personalised programs, strong community connections and a purpose-built learning environment, we empower young people with diverse needs to thrive both at school and beyond.
Located in Bendigo North, Kalianna School is a leading specialist school dedicated to supporting students with intellectual disabilities from ages 5 to 18.

With a long-standing history in the Bendigo community, Kalianna now operates from a modern, purpose-built facility on its main campus in Nolan Street, designed to meet the diverse needs of its learners.
At the heart of Kalianna is a commitment to ensuring every student feels valued, supported and capable of success. Guided by the school’s core values of being positive, inclusive and creative, staff work to create a safe and engaging environment where every student can thrive. This is underpinned by a clear vision, aspiring to be world-leading in research-driven education, wellbeing practices and innovative technology.

Learning at Kalianna is centred on understanding each student as an individual. Programs focus not only on academic achievement, but also on communication, independence, social development and wellbeing. Students are supported to build confidence and develop practical life skills that will support them well beyond the classroom.
Kalianna delivers a comprehensive curriculum aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, alongside senior pathways including the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC). The school’s Pathways program provides specialised learning opportunities delivered across multiple settings, including the Mundy Street campus, local TAFE environments and onsite at the main campus.

These programs focus on building independence, employability skills and community participation, ensuring students are well prepared for life after school.
Students also benefit from access to the Whipstick campus, where they can connect with the natural environment through bushland experiences and hands-on learning. This unique setting allows students to explore outdoor education, develop environmental awareness and engage in practical, real-world learning opportunities.

A broad range of specialist subjects further enriches student learning at Kalianna. These include drama, food technology, science, physical education and health, dance, art, digital technology and outdoor education and environmental studies. These programs provide students with opportunities to explore their interests, build new skills and experience success in a variety of settings.
A strong focus on wellbeing underpins everything at Kalianna. The school implements School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) and restorative practices to create a respectful, inclusive and supportive environment.

Positive relationships are central to the school’s approach, with staff working closely with students, families and external services to provide holistic support.
Kalianna recognises that education is most effective when it is a partnership. Strong connections with families, allied health professionals and community organisations ensure that each student is supported in all aspects of their development.

Kalianna School is more than a place of learning, it is a community where students are encouraged to grow, achieve and be celebrated. Through inclusive practices, innovative programs and a strong commitment to student wellbeing, Kalianna continues to empower young people to reach their full potential and confidently engage in their future.
