THREE founding members of the Heathcote Artists group. reunited last week in the lead up to the organisation’s 20th Anniversary Art Show on the King’s Birthday Weekend.
The group has been a creative outlet and weekly social gathering for more than 100 artists in a range of mediums since it began.
Adriana Bowes, Iris Mclean and Alice Petherbridge met at The Watering Hole to reminisce and talk about the upcoming show. Clara Carlsen was unable to attend.
It was Bowes’ idea for artists to come together for regular meetings and social activities.
“Plans for the group began in September 2005 and we became officially incorporated in November 2005,” said Bowes.
“I loved meeting up with fellow artists, but I became too busy and stopped in 2010.
“I did felting and made titanium jewellery, selling all over Australia.”
Mclean has been painting for more than 30 years.
“I remember I bought my first brush at a sale at the Axedale Pub,” she said.
“I like to work in oils and acrylic and enjoy painting landscapes.
“My favourite scenes are of Central Australia. I love the red dirt.”
Petherbridge works in acrylic, pastels and watercolours.
“I moved from Heathcote to Trentham six years ago and really miss everyone, but I try to come back at least once a month.”

Petherbridge’s wife Rosie Hill was formerly secretary for the group.
“I think the group’s biggest strength is in the social aspect,” she said.
“Members inspire and encourage each other, and some fantastic friendships have been formed.
“I was lucky enough to be involved in several of the group’s trips away and there are great memories from each one.”
Heathcote Artists has 16 members who meet at Heathcote Golf Club every Monday morning.
“We have a waiting list as that is all we have room for,” Mclean said.
The group has regular outings and exhibit their work in various locations, including Colbinabbin Hotel, The Watering Hole and Heathcote Winery.
Earlier this year the group exhibited their work at the Australian Plant Society Heathcote Plant Sale and Flower Show.
“Our primary motivation is to enjoy our crafts, but it is nice, and very encouraging, when we sell a piece,” Mclean said.
