A thank you to drought affected farmers

WITH farmers in central Victoria hit hard by drought conditions, Pyalong Neighbourhood House is seeking donations of non-perishable food items to make up hampers.
The hampers are being distributed to local farmers in the Pyalong, Glenaroua, Baynton, Tooborac, Emu Flat, Mia Mia and surrounding areas.
To date more than 60 hampers have been distributed.
“Farmers in central Victoria, including around Pyalong and the districts surrounding us, have been hit hard by the drought,” said Pyalong Neighbourhood president Moira Waye.
“For families who are really struggling to feed their animals, some paying up to $10,000 a week for fodder, people deserve help to feed their families at this difficult time.
“We are seeking donations of non-perishable items, such as canned, jar or dry goods, pantry items and staples.
“We cannot accept fresh food, dairy or meat as we are unable to store and distribute safely.”
Ms Waye said the hampers are not charity but a thank you from the community.
“Pride often gets in the way,” she said. “Farmers are sometimes reluctant to accept the hampers, but I want them to know they are not on their own.

“Times are tough, and the hampers are a thank you from the community for all they do.
“If anyone needs a hamper, including a bag of dog food, please let us know.”
Ms Waye is hoping the State Government will do something to help farmers soon.
“Mitchell Shire Council has sent letters to the State Government asking that Mitchell Shire be declared drought stricken,” she said.
“Let’s hope common sense prevails and we get the declaration soon.
“There is a government grant for community food programs, but no money will be awarded until October or November and our farmers need help now.”
Donations can be taken to Pyalong Neighbourhood House at 13 High Street Pyalong, on Monday mornings before 1pm, or 9am to 4.30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
They can also be left at the Pyalong General Store, Wallan Neighbourhood House, and the OKR FM office at Kilmore Racecourse, East Street Kilmore.
Pick-up is available for those who can’t travel to a collection point.
